Review of Broken Throne by Victoria Aveyard

I was worried about reading Broken Throne because Victoria Aveyard seems to love finishing her books in a cliff-hanger, with many questions unanswered. This has both made me love the books and frustrated me over everything we do not know. War Storm had left me unsatisfied and so I was preoccupied that this final book would leave me equally incomplete. My worries were unfounded. Broken Throne not only has a final book feel to it but has also left me very satisfied with the ending. Although off course Aveyard didn’t answer every question, she did finish the book with an ending to the plot I have loved.

There is something about reading the aftermath of a fight that makes it even more real in my mind, no matter the world it comes from. Of course, Broken Throne wasn’t just a sequel to War Storm, it was also a prequel to Red Queen. We got to experience Coriane’s story and how Farley first got her footing in Norta, how the beginning of the revolution happens.

It was both in the past and the future, and although it did leave us with certain questions the story in itself was finished. We had an ending to Cal’s, Mare’s, Maven’s, Evangeline’s, Montfort’s, Kilorn’s, Cameron’s, the Scarlet Guard’s, Farley’s and all of the characters’ storyline.

The thing about books that revolve around toppling a suppressive system is that they forget that the fight doesn’t end with one war, it takes many long years and even centuries, there are negotiations involve and treaties and the breakdown of negotiation. It’s a long difficult process, Broken Throne realistically shows this in Mare Barrow’s world.

The central fight, which was the battles in Norta and against Maven, however, was finished. King Maven is gone, and his government has been toppled. Therefore, the fight for which the book series was started has ended and the story with it.

I loved the idea that for the characters this is only the beginning not just their happy ending. There are still more fights, more battles, more wars, but also more happiness, more love, more parties, more friends and allies to be made… Their story isn’t ending with Broken Throne. I think it was a beautiful way to end The Red Queen series. Mare’s story has never been clean and cut so the ending to her and her friends’ book series should not be either.

This was probably one of my favorite final books in a series. I like the idea that it didn’t just end there, that there is still a world out there where the characters are living their lives.

Red Queen has been one of my favorites series since I started reading it, I always have a hard time after the ending of one of the books. Personally, I loved the book, it took me some time to read because I was not ready to finish this series, but I loved and enjoyed the ending.

The characters’ arches and future go with each one of them and complements them very well. You can see how much they have grown since the first time we meet them.

I would recommend the Red Queen Pentalogy and have recommended it in the past.
